Following up from a previous post regarding Transforming Jess.

Rightly patients asked that it would be helpful to see Jess without makeup and also the full frontal photo's.

We take photo's exacerbating the muscle movements to see the impact on the face. The same movements are repeated on review two weeks later. If any issues we then do minor tweakments.

As explained before. Jess's journey started with toxins to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and open her eyes. We then filled the missing fat pads with filler and then completed it all with skin care.

In young patients the treatments is for Beautification and some restoration. Jess was 34 when we started.

In older women we have to do a lot more on restoration and regeneration of the skin and fat pads before we move to beautification.

What happens in a Botox Consultation, What Do We Treat and Why?

Many patient request Botox treatments for lines between their eyes or around their eyes.

Did you know that your facial muscles works as a unit. There is a misconception that the aim of Botox is just for frown lines. We use toxins to manipulate muscles and the main reason is the hood that appears over the outside of the eyes. By manipulating the muscles with Botox we are able to pull the eyes open and they appear bigger.

The bonus is that we also reduce fine lines and wrinkles but we also lift brows and stop pebbling of the chin.

So during a Botox consultation we analyse your facial muscles in exacerbated movements to determine where they sit and what they do.

Therefore, we ask you to frown (very angry), then act surprised to review the raise of the muscles but mainly see what the chances are of opening the eyes up. The third movement is a smile to look at the lines and how it impacts the face.

You mostly see your face from the front and not the sides or when you rest, eat or talk. It is in these actions that patients can often get attributes that makes them look angry, sad or unhappy when they are not.

Before injecting we will map out our muscles and place little markers where we believe it will have the greatest impact before we inject.

Again, no two people have the same muscle thickness, movement or outcome. It is pretty unique to you.

However, I will never treat only one area and remember that Botox is a prescription item and is only meant for you.

Why Do People Seek Aesthetic Treatments?

Every patient has a unique story which affects their wellbeing one way or another. Some patients have old sports injuries that caused a deformity to their face, ageing changes, life style changes and skin changes.

Whatever the reason it boils down to Maslow's hierarchy of needs also known as motivational theory. The top tier of the hierarchy is where every person aim to be in life. We are living our full potential and have great self esteem and respect for others and we belong and experience love.

The lower tiers is very basic and often where you need help in fulfilling your basic needs. You cannot move up on the tiers if some of these needs are not fulfilled.

So when someone's self confidence is affected they are out of sorts with themselves which then impacts how they are with others around them.

When patients seek aesthetic treatments they mostly fall between love and belonging issues or issues with self esteem. The story of their life and the changes to their face (whatever the cause) is stopping them from living their full potential.

Often just making a little tweak to a broken nose, a fallen cheek, improving skin pigmentation, restoring a changed lip or cheek makes all the difference. It is so easy to do but the impact for patients is often life changing.

Why Is Consultations Important and What To Expect?

Our consultations are free and there is no rush during this process. The aim of a consultation is to get to know YOU. What has happened and what concerns you? We find that often we treat a feeling not a line or wrinkle.

We do not believe in fast turnstile meetings or treatments. We aim for care and friendship. What bugs you and we explore your hormones, nutrition and changes your body and emotions have undergone.

We then take time to explain the usual changes that occurs in our body as we age from around 28. We explain the bone, fat pad, muscle and skin changes in depth and how it relates to your face and skin.

We then plan and agree your treatment suited to your finances and wishes. From there we might treat you and after two weeks review your outcomes.

Your life is a journey and so is your treatments. We take as long as you need.

Day 5 - Busting aesthetic judgments.

Reading and understanding facial expressions is part of social interaction and social intelligence. Facial expressions signal non verbal communication and there are basic emotional expressions that are universal. These expressions are disgust, fear, joy, surprise, anger and sadness.

Specific muscles are involved in specific facial expressions, such as frown lined for disgust, disapproval or anger. Down turned mouth and specifically mouth corners signals negative emotions such as disapproval, anger, discontent or unhappiness. Compressed and thinned lips are associated with imminent danger or anger.

Did you know that when you meet someone you unconsciously look to their eyes, corner of cheeks and then down to their lips? The reason is that you are scanning for danger or sensuality.

As time marches on our whole face undergo changes at every atomic level due to the complex interplay between the facial muscles' internal and external repetitive activity.

The bone in our face is constantly in motion with contraction, bony resorption and changing density. The skeletal changes is much more significant in our face than anywhere in our body. It drastically accelerates with nutritional problems, child bearing but especially the menopause.

The muscles in our face increases in length and tone. The result is that when the face is in relaxation the increased tone creates contractures. This is more evident in the corners of the mouth and frown lines. The chin develops pebbling and upside down mouth. Alongside the muscle is also ligaments which becomes slack and create jowling and a middle face that is sagging.

These changes create facial characteristics which we wrongfully interpret as sadness, tiredness, disapproval, contempt, meanness of anger. Many of our patients seek aesthetic treatments because of their involuntarily facial expressions that has changed.

This is one of the biggest reasons patients seek aesthetic treatments. They don't want to look younger they just want to look better and feel like their old selves.

Day 4 - Explaining Treatments and Debusting Misconceptions.

I have posted a lot about Jess in the past but she is a great case and one of my many favourite patients where I continue to delight in her journey.

I met Jess about 5 years ago and our journey has been a long but great one. When I saw Jess the first time I was struck by how sad and tired she looked. However, this is an attribute because the reality is that Jess is extremely vivacious and bubbly. She was only around 34 and should be thriving.

Jess initially only wanted Botox because all she could see was her lined forehead. However, there was a lot more going on in Jess's face which made her look aged beyond her years.

The reason why Jess had all those attributes is because she had significant loss of fat pads in the middle of her face and chin. Because the cheeks were missing their fat pads, it affected her tear troughs which became deeper. Her chin was dissociated from her jaw and also much smaller balanced against her forehead.

She also started to experience hooding on the side of her eyes caused by loss of bone over her temples. The muscle changes caused her eyebrows to droop.

Her skin was also lined, patchy and red with sun damage in places.

Jess's treatment started with Botox which opened and shaped her eyebrows. The eyebrow shape was also further improved by permanent makeup which gave it a beautiful structure.

I then continued to address the fat pad loss in her cheeks, temples, tear troughs and chin.

The final cherry on the cake included Obagi Nu-Derm skin care which evened out her skin tone, texture and improve her skin overall.

Jess is now 40 but looking better than she did at 34. She still has her whole life in front of her. Imagine if we did not restore her fat pads how much more tired Jess would look. It affects patients' quality of life and wellbeing when it is so easy to fix. Jess is still Jess but better.

Day 3 - Busting Aesthetic Myths

Day 1 we talked about attributes which makes a patient look sad, angry, ill or tired. Day 2 we discussed bony resorption and how bone changes during ageing. Today it is all about the fat pads.

The single biggest cause of facial changes are because of fat pads. We all have two types of fat pads. Deep fat pads which sit on top of bone and superficial fat pads just under the skin.

Fat pads are closely packed areas of fat cells and their purpose are to give volume, shape and definition to your face. They form your tear trough, cheek, chin and jaw line.

As bone changes, fat pad changes with it or they are also resorbed. There are ligaments over the cheek and jowl which also holds the fat pads in place.

The fat pads within the middle of the face is the usually the worst and first affected. When those fat pad disappears the support goes with it. That cause the cheeks and tear troughs to change. The result is deepening tear troughs, deeper naso-labial folds (nose to mouth line), flat cheeks and loss of definition.

Correcting fat pads, usually results in patients looking fresher, younger, happier and overall restored. Treating fat pads is the biggest game changer for patients.

We treat fat pads with filler which is a hyaluronic acid and mimics the hyaluronic acid in our own face. It restores volume, improves texture and hydrates the tissues deeply.

Day 2 - Ageing Explained (Busting myths)

Ageing is very different for every individual. The reason is genetics, illness, injury, nutrition, menopause, sun exposure, lifestyle etc.

We start to absorb bone around the age of 28 and it accelerates significantly when you enter menopause or had children.

The bone changes in significant parts of the face and in some areas worse than others. The dome of the head changes as well as the brow bone and around the eyes especially the inner upper corner and the lower outer corner. So the eyes get bigger (larger) and deeper.

The biggest changes occur around the cheek, jaw and chin.

The cheek from the front becomes narrower and shorter. The cheek also moves backwards whilst the jaw moves forward.

The chin and jaw resorbs and becomes shorter and narrower.

So basically you have now lost the bone foundation of your face which changes your structure. This is why many women do not recognise themselves and don't feel like their old self.

These changes impact on the fat pad, muscle and skin. Muscles contracts so chin turns up and fat pads slides or absorbs and the skin changes as a result.

One of the biggest reasons we treat patients with filler is to address some of these changes and restore our patients to their former self or as close as possible.#aesthetics #uniskinbelper #ageing

There is so many misconception in aesthetics which is one of the reasons I decided to write a book to support patients. I am going to spend this week on posts explaining the changes our faces undergo as we age and hopefully busting the myths especially on "growing old gracefully".

Some people are naturally lucky to have their facial fat pads up to a good age but many other don't. The anatomical changes start to occur around the age of 28 but accelerates significantly as we approach menopause. Lifestyle, injury, trauma, stress, nutrition and exposure to sun are a few factors that accelerates ageing.

The skin has 5 layers and each one of them changes over time. Working from the inside out.
The first layer of your face starts with bone. Layered, above the bone is deep fat pads, followed by muscle. Above the muscle is superficial fat pads and then it ends in the skin.

All of these layers undergo changes. That is why we often have to do treatments in various layers. The changes causes facial attributes such as a patient looking sad, angry, unhappy, tired, ill even when they are not.

I will discuss the changes of each area over the following days. The message for today is that the change in bone causes muscles and fat pads to change, which then becomes fixed.

Our face now starts to change and remain in a position which we are not used to. We start to recognise your mothers, feel tired because we look tired and it also affects our confidence.

Patients choose to undergo treatments because they don't want to look younger again. They just want to look a best version of themselves. The other reason is that they still feel a certain age on the inside but don't look it on the outside.

So very true!!! ♥️

Yeah!! Uniskin has been awarded Excellence Status from Save Face. It is only achieved when a clinic surpasses over 50 positive reviews and proved high standards in practice. This is one of a few awards the other is Obagi Ambassador.

We also had our 3rd annual review and passed the accreditation for the third consecutive year.

Why accreditation? Aesthetics is unregulated which means anyone and everyone are performing various treatments. We as a clinic are not comfortable with the lack of standards and chose to go with Save Face.

Save Face developed a national register of clinics performing aesthetic treatments. The accreditation process is robust with interview on procedures, policy and procedure protocols, standards of practice and care. The aim is to provide you our patients with peace of mind and knowing that our clinic has been assessed by other experts in the field.

Brilliant news - well done

Have you ever wondered about how your food intake is affecting your health and the impact it has on your body?

We now offer Nutrigenomics in our clinic as part of our wellness agenda.

We are only 1 of 10 clinics in the Uk offering DNA testing for health and wellbeing.

Nothing is as accurate as your DNA and it doesn’t get more personalised.

The test measures the impact your diet has on your health and risk of developing diseases.
It Measures vitamin status, inflammation, intolerances, toxicity levels and much more.

Based on your bodies specific issues and intolerances it recommends over 800 foods specific for your body to improve your health and wellbeing.

The test requires a saliva sample which takes 2 weeks to process. A dietician, immunologist, pharmacist and geneticist interpret your results and make recommendations.

This way you know exactly what your body needs with regards to supplements and diet.

We also do DNA testing for hair loss in the same way. Get in touch if you want to book a consultation.

This little girl in the photo's is me. I had big dreams to become a Marine Biologist or Oceanographer and travel the world. Unfortunately, my parents went bankrupt just as my journey was supposed to start.

I never wanted to do nursing as my whole family are either doctors, nurses, professors and I did not want that life. I want to be in the sea and nature. However, I had no choice but go into nursing as the government paid for it all and it relieved my parents from the added pressures. So I completed a 4 year diploma in psychiatry, midwifery, general and community nursing. Accommodation and a small salary was included in the package. Little did I know of the world that was waiting around the corner !!

I now thank my serendipitous lucky stars for the turn my life took. I am travelling and I am a diver if not an Oceanographer but I learned something incredible. At my very core I am a healer and a carer. Who knew? It only took 30 years in nursing to figure this out.

I have always felt like an outsider and as if I never fully fit until I became an entrepreneur and took a chance on myself, my skills and my passion for people and all the things I have learned 8 years ago.

I discovered my passion is for men and women over the age of 45 because we all have lived and now experience change in so many levels on the in and outside. Everything I have done and studied in my life are finally coming together to serve and care for my fellow men and women and off course the planet where possible. It is incredible liberating to understand my purpose finally but also care for my patients and developing treatment programmes to transform and elevate my patients. Very humbling xx

Writing a Book in Pictures - Towards the end the wheels were coming off.

There is more to aesthetics / cosmetics than just Botox and Fillers. We age at cellular level due to our nutrition, genetic changes, hormones and life events. Treating your inside and skin is even more important than the outside.

I decided to write a book for my clients full of case studies, latest research, market trends and much more. When I set off on this journey I was full of beans and excited with optimism.

Finishing my first draft was super exciting. Then I needed to send it out to 6 different people in the industry for feedback. My baby started to look ugly in places and I am okay with that. Then the editing started. Writing, researching, running a business, seeing patients and a household was taking its toll. I then had to practice what I preach and wrote whilst on a drip which is full of nutrients and vitamins to help with the exhaustion.

The final push was so many notes and reminders I had stickers everywhere. However, giving up was never an option. My book is now finally with the Publishers and it starts all over again. For now I have a few days respite before the second round of editing and finalising.

I am looking forward to the end .....................................or is it? New things on the horizon at Uniskin, new partners and more services.

Too many woman are hiding and judging what they look like from a photo.
